Out of the way. It's what we were looking for in a place like BBH. Parked right out front...no wait. Great service good food. I had linguine and clams. Very good wife's salad looked good. Cool old house very eclectic and well done. Hell the painting on the wall right by my head was $5800! I had to lick it. Never know when you can do that again huh?

Great service. Sat outside which was nice. Toward the end of main st. Drinks were reasonably priced. The pasta Primavera was very garlicky. The lobster bisque was good. Overall pleased would go again.

The food was phenomenal .. Blueberry pie on point ... We had the lobster special and lobster linguini we would highly recommend ... staff was very friendly

This restaurant is Great as well as the service..... we were visiting from Florida and left prescription glasses there, .contacted the restaurant and "Dennis" and he said he would make sure they were sent back to us and they were, ...we sent a pre paid envelope and the glasses arrived very quickly. This was so nice of them to do this, and we will certainly visit them again next yr...loved the scallops and the Blue Berry Martini..yummo..

The waiter seemed to want to be anywhere else. He did not know the specials. The food was average. Very disappointing.

A very busy restaurant near the bottom of Main Street, with both indoor and outdoor seating, there's not much to complain about here. We took the precaution of making a reservation, and even at 1930 of an October evening, places were limited. It's not terrifically fancy, being a series of connected rooms in what looks to have been a large house, but it's comfortable enough, easy on the eye and ear. Service was prompt and efficient, especially given how full the place was, and the food was wholesome, well prepared and presented. Wine and beer selections are fair and prices not too bad.

Food ok, nothing special. The Acadia Weekly paper touts many selections (65 entrees) to choose from, but not...really that great a selection. This restaurant was also touted as being a good value, but prices were comparable to the rest of the restaurants in the area.

We really liked this place. Friendly people, great atmosphere and a solid menu combined to make us very happy diners. Do like we did and make a reservation to avoid waiting in line. Blueberry daquiris were creative and delicious. Bisque and chowder were okay but not great (a little watery). Our meals, however (lobster for her and lobster & shrimp pasta for me) were fantastic. Our server even showed us (lobster noobs) how to pick properly. The dessert menu is extensive, and my cheesecake was spot-on. Not much else to say except that this place seems unlikely to disappoint. We will probably return!

We had the lobster feast and the lobster pasta, and both were really good. The lobster was really fresh and tasty! The sides were not much to write home about, I ordered a side veggies as part of the lobster feast, and it wasn't much different from microwavable veggies. But if good seafood is what you are looking for, this place is good.

  • david g.

enh.. the mussels were good, the pasta was straight out of a box, with frozen veggies and canned sauce. Cheap, but so is a 7-11..

  • Ame k.

i did not go there for seafood, i saw the dessert menu and i was like let's go in there. The unlimited menu for pasta is cheap and not to mention how great the dessert is. you go bar harbor they only make pies, and there is the only place you can find real Italian and good dessert.

Poor Boys has been our favorite restaurant since we discovered it more than 12 years ago. We were a bit nervous when we learned it had been sold after being under the same management for 30 years. We were very pleasantly surprised to find the staff in the front of the house had not changed much - the bartender is now the manager, and most of the wait staff are the same. The food is just as good as ever and the main menu has not changed. The ridiculously long dessert menu is a big shorter than it was (all of the desserts are coming from the former owner and her business partner who opened a bakery down the street). We met the new owner who indicated he plan to make some tweaks over time, but no planned drastic changes. It is still our favorite restaurant in town.

Friendly staff! Excellent food. Amazing early bird dinner deal. I decided on this place because of the beautiful converted-house feel of the restaurant. We had a very nice time and enjoyed excellent food. The only thing disappointing about Poor Boy's is that disgruntled vacationers can't get over themselves and continue to score the restaurant below it's worth. Go. You'll love it!

A wonderful experience! It is difficult to cook shrimp properly without either making them chewy or just plain bland. The shrimp in my Shrimp Fra Diablo were neither. They were not overlooked yet the sweet / spicy marinara sauce was infused into them! Truly excellent food!

The smells drew us in , but we were a little disappointed . My husband had a steak and it wasn't overly tasteful ...disappointing as it was high priced . I had fish and chips ... It wasn't too bad We shared a cheesecake for dessert and were also disappointed with it . Overly priced for the quality of the meal . Would I recommend ..... Likely not .

How best to describe food in this restaurant? Think what an Olive Garden cook would churn out when he happens upon an expected stash of fresh seafood. Stay with in-season local catch (lobsters and haddock during my visit) and the food can be rather good especially considering the price, but I kept wondering what chefs in the white tableclothed restaurant half a block down the street might have done with the quality ingredients, rather than burying them in diner- quality pasta and sides.

almost didn't come because of a couple low reviews. glad we ignored them. Great food. Had lobster bisque which is not only creamy and sherry but has lots of little lobstah bits in it. crab claw appetizer - yum. Lobstah poor boy pasta & Lobstah Fra diavolo - no skimping on lobstah, good sauce. coconut creme pie & poor boy coffee. not a single wrong note in this meal. price is good and service is excellent. don't let one bad review scare you away. I'm a serious foodie and this is as good as any - at least it was tonight. mangia.

don't know why the rating is so low, me and hubby loved the food. we actually went back two nights in a row. both times we sat by the window and the atmosphere was good. i love their mussels, 1.5 pounds for 8.99. the haddock was very good and big portion. we also had the scallop, they gave you 6 big scallops baked the same was as the haddock. my only complain is that both of the baked dishes had too much oil/butter, other than that, the dishes were really good. oh, we also had the shrimp pasta during their happy hour 4-6, 12 big yummy shrimps, the portion was so big that me hubby almost couldn't finish, and we both are very big eaters. my only complain is their soup, we had clam chowder and lobster bisque, they were both very watery. don't know why they do it like that.

On entering we headed to the bar, but were told we could also enjoy happy hour pricing in the dining room or the semi enclosed patio. We chose the latter and ordered mojitos. I asked the waitress if fresh mint was used by the bartender and was it muddled? I received an affirmative response, but the drinks still turned out to be mediocre. This restaurant offers an extensive early bird menu from which we both ordered the baked stuffed haddock with Maine crab meat & shrimp stuffing. We never detected any crab meat and the haddock was topped rather than stuffed, but it was a generous and tasty entree. My wife chose a baker while I opted for the butterfly pasta topped with a delicious and chunky marinara sauce. Pricing was very reasonable. A couple of side notes: The day was unusually hot and we discovered there was no air conditioning in the restaurant though a few fans were scattered about the upstairs dining room. The only restrooms were discovered were adjacent to the second floor dining room so I don't know if there is any provision for handicap people.

First time here. After reading some reviews I was sceptic about the lobster scampi worried it would have too much butter. I asked for it with light butter and had no problems. My mom got the lobster poor boy and I tried it and loved it!

  • Maggie O.

Stopped by here based on the fact that every time I walked by, the place was packed with people. I greatly enjoyed the mussels, but cannot say the same for my main. I got the lobster scampi and while the dish was packed with lobster, the pasta was sitting in a puddle of butter. My boyfriend's fried haddock, crab, shrimp, and lobster meal was missing crab and had almost no shrimp. Very disappointing. Our server took 20 minutes to take our orders and was pretty much absent once we got our food. Afraid to pay by card and wait for her to take ages to return, we scrambled together the necessary cash and hurried out.

Kathleen and her chefs made an amazing reverse German chocolate cake and white chocolate blueberry cheesecake for our wedding! Our guests couldn't stop raving about both. Do yourself a service and eat at Poor Boy's!

  • Douglas T.

Food quality - 3 - rolls were tired, lobster bisque was average with no lobster, ribeye and salad were ok Service - 4 - sat at the bar due to the wait, bar tender was attentive Value - 2- average food with higher than average prices I will pay anything for food and measure most restaurant experiences by asking myself 1 question, would I go back. Unfortunately there was nothing here that would bring me back.

  • Bill L.

Lobster bisque seemed like they used half the bottle of sherry to make it. Pasta side bow tie noodles never made it to al dente. Lobster was fine but a bit chewy. Clam chowder very watery, no body to it at all. Dessert wasn't any better. Save yourself the trip. Don't want your table mates saying "you should have paid more attention to Yelp!"

Excellent. Lobster Sauté the best ever. My wife had the Scallops and she thought they were the best. My friend had the Crab Cakes and his wife had the chicken with apricot sauce. Maddy the waitress was at her best which made ordering the food fun and exciting. Poor Boys is really a 10.

Blueberry daiquiri's interesting flavor but a little sweet. Lobster sliders just not good. Bland tasting lobster and too much bread. Maybe lobster not meant for sliders....

Ate here two nights in a row. Food was great and the service was also. Lobster Alfredo one night and the early bird lobster special the next. Went for dessert both nights and was very impressed both times; for chocolate lovers the flourless cake is outstanding!

I have vacationed in Bar Harbor since I was 6. Every year my family and I come back and every year we eat multiple meals at Poor Boys. I get the same thing every time, the chicken Alfredo. It is absolutely the best chicken Alfredo I have ever eaten. We love the relaxing atmosphere and the staff, as we have known them for years. They even allow us to bring our dog as we eat on the deck!

Cappuccino was good. Had the mocha cheesecake, was dense but tasty. Service was ok. I don't like the new renovations of the tables downstairs. when I'm eating I want to see the person I'm with, not whoever is coming down the stairs or whats in the garbage can behind the bar. Other than that, it's an old reliable on the dessert front.

My first dining experience in Maine! They have a small parking lot in the back, which is convenient given how packed downtown can get. I ordered the Poor Boy's Lobster - bowtie pasta with lobster sherry cream sauce. I loved it so much I made my own sherry cream sauce when I got home! It had a decent serving of lobster meat, and the sauce was perfect for the pasta. Others at my table got lobsters, but they seemed to have softer shells than most other places though.

Great place to eat with reasonable prices. I had the crusted baked haddock dinner and it was very good. My sweetheart went directly for the desert, wild blueberry pie with walnut crumb topping. She declared it outstanding and one of the best deserts ever. This restaurant is further south down Main street and not in the central section of town but it is worth the extra walk for a few blocks. Great drinks. Eat at the bar to jump the line.

My husband and I ate at Poor Boys Gourmet the first night we were in Bar Harbor, ME. The restaurant was recommended as a place to eat for seafood and reasonable prices. It was about 6:30 PM on a Tuesday evening and there was a wait of about 30-40 minutes. We sat at the bar and enjoyed a drink while we waited for our table. The bar area was small with only a few bar stools but the bartender was very friendly and efficient. He seemed to know quite a few of the regulars and was also very nice to the first timers. We were seated at a nice table and immediately offered several slices of delicious sourdough bread. Our server was nice and efficient. My husband ordered the Linguini and Clams. He enjoyed his meal except for the garlic peas. They were nothing to write home about. i had the spaghetti with homemade meatballs which included a choice of bow ties or linguini. My entree was very good. The price was reasonable at $11.99. The dessert menu included 23 different homemade options. It was hard to decide but we finally settled on the blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream. It was delicious!! I recommend Poor Boy's Gourmet. Next time I'll dine earlier and go to the daily Happy Hour which includes an extensive Happy Hour menu and drink specials.

Seafood dishes were very creative and well done. My wife said the crab cakes were the best ever and she should know because she was trained by an southeast coast chief to prepare herself. I had lobster and linguine in a spicy tomato sauce, wow. Extensive menu with an Italian influence. Desert menu is huge with excellent dishes. Definitely a place to recommend and go back to.

The boiled lobster feast is pretty good deal if you want to eat a lot of food. Overall dish quality is mediocre. My husband had the lobst scampi and he is unimpressed by it. I also had the blueberry daiquiri and it was refreshing but not very alcoholics in my opinion.

    (3)
  • Sayuri K.

The Blueberry Daiquiri was delicious. The Hot and Spicy crab dip is a bit spicy but yummy. I ordered the lobster branzoni and it was delicious. Locals say it is the best place in Maine.

We had heard good things about the restaurant and finally decided to try it out. the service was friendly and fast, the prices were decent, the food was not all it was hyped up to be. The baked stuffed haddock was tasteless and they don't even have tartar sauce so bring your own. Also, the shrimp was not deveined so they were picked out of the dish. The lobster roll sliders were also tasteless. The lobster must have been sitting in the pot too long. The coleslaw was brown and wilted and had obviously been sitting out all day. It was also very vinegary. It was a good attempt but we will probably not be back again.

My husband and I went to Poor Boy's recently because we were looking for a decently priced place to have some Maine lobster. We thought that the 22.99 lobster dinner deal (with lobster bisque or clam chowder, baked potato or pasta marinara and lobster or crab plus a brownie a la mode) was a steal so we decided to check this place out. The restaurant was crowded and had a wait of about an hour long, so we thought that this place had to be good. We decided to eat at the bar to cut down on our wait time, but while we were waiting we heard even more rave reviews about this place. Needless to say, our expectations were high and our mouths were watering. We ended up going with the clam chowder (on the recommendation of the waitress), pasta and lobster. What can I say? The clam chowder was watery and flavorless, the pasta not properly cooked, and the lobster nothing really to speak of. The best thing about our meal was probably the caesar salad we needed to order because we weren't allowed to split an entree. The waitresses were all very friendly and maybe other things on the menu were good, but we were not impressed. Sorry Poor Boy's. :(

They should take the word Gourmet right out of the name. Prices were moderate if the food was good but $20+ per person with NO drinks was way too high for tasteless food, frozen vegetables, and ho-hum pasta. The only thing striking about the dinner was the horrible smell of the muscles. We asked the waitress to remove the plate from the table because it turned our stomaches. Without questioning the request, she swept the plate away. It was the same for the chicken Marsala (worse than a microwave dinner), the waitress removed the nearly full plate without a single word. We paid $90 plus tip and left with sour stomachs. Never again!

If Applebee's is your idea of gourmet, than the Poor Boy's Gourmet will please you. The best thing about this restaurant is the seating on the porches in the evening. The food is OK. I had the Lobster Fra Diavlo. The sauce tasted OK, but there was hardly any of it, and most of the lobster meat was overcooked and tough. My wife had the Bistro Cut steak which she enjoyed. (She thinks my review is a little too harsh.) The steak was cooked properly and was a good cut. We had mussels for an appetizer which were ok, and we didn't have dessert. The portions are generous and the staff was very friendly. If you can get a table along the railing on one of the porches, this would be a pleasurable dining experience, although you can get better food in Bar Harbor.

  • Steve M.

The food here is ok. I had a steak and it was done correct. The mashed potatoes were boiled to death and had no texture and the roasted veggies were mushy and tasted boiled. We also had some pasta and it was boiled grocery store noodles tossed with butter. Reminded me of those broke college days. I head they have good desert but with the unimpressive entrees we opted for ice cream down the street.

What a great little place this is just down the end of the main street in Bar Harbor. Very relaxing open aired second floor deck seating. We had the Sautéed Lobster it was delicious and the portion size was perfect we were not over stuffed or underfed. If you get this don't over eat the crackers in the butter it's a bit much. My wife had a Blueberry Daquari which she said was perfect and I had a Blueberry Martini the mixologist here is excellent. Our waitress was pleasant and at tentative and made us very comfortable all in all a very enjoyable dining experience.

Our waitress, who appeared to be a 15-year-old foreign exchange student from Russia, was so damn eager to help us, and came over to check on things excessively often, prancing away each time in her gingham short shorts. It was like a bad "barely-legal" adult film. Then, our water and two small, stale pieces of bread were delivered by a boy who couldn't have been more than 12. We ordered a salad and some sort of bowtie pasta in sherry sauce. The salad was nasty, the pasta wasn't fully cooked and the sauce tasted like they poured a quarter bottle of sherry in there after it was pulled off the burner. Green beans were straight out of a can.

My wife is a lobster-holic and is always searching for the perfect hot lobster dish. Poor Boy's Gourmet takes second place with their lobster sauté. Her favorite is the hot lobster roll at the Fisherman Restaurant in Noank, CT. I had a scampi dish that was also very good. We had a very friendly waitress from Romanian that provided excellent service.

Got the bandolini lobster feast, loved it! Clam chowder rocks. Baked potato was great, roasted veggies awesome. Husband had a marinara and Alfredo sauce dish with chicken and loved it. Lobster quantity was small, but tasty.

Seated upstairs at our request, started with Blueberry daiquiri which tasted like pie yummy, next clam chowder excellent with plenty of clams,I had scallop and shrimp alfredo which was perfect and very filling could not eat it all, spouse had shrimp scampi which he said was exactly as he would like it. We wantd to try the desserts but we had to take them home. I had turtle cheesecake (I think that was the name) I only ate half thinking I could share with my spouse and him with me. Spouse had blueberry cheesecake and he did not share. All of the servers were right on and as it was our first time we took a little time to review menu but they were patient and everything was great

  • Fun M.

My salmon was delicious, the blueberry daiquiri was lip-smacking, but the desserts were beyond compare. I was mad I ate dinner (actually I was mad I ate anything all day), it took up space that I could've filled with more pie. There are 10+ choices, but I went the traditional blueberry pie and it was one of the better decisions I have made. The kids meals are big, my kids split an entree and had leftovers. The staff is friendly and very helpful with kids too.

I had the lobster scampi with a side of garlic peas. The bread was great. The scampi was great. The peas were meh...i didn't taste any garlic...they just tasted like thawed peas to me. The service was great. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Overall, I'm a fan.

  • Jennifer R.

Solid meal, staff were friendly (if a bit frenetic). Rolls brought out to accompany meal I would rate as just ok - somewhat flat, couple of them a bit hard. For the entrees I had the stuffed scallops. A huge portion of scallops - the breaded topping was quite good, I didn't see much of the shrimp/crab stuffing they advertised. My mom had the linguine with clam sauce and said it was perfect - I tried it and it had great flavor and tons of clams. Wine list pretty minimal and overpriced. Blueberry pie for dessert was fantastic! Good choice in Bar Harbor - the night we were there quite a few locals dining there. Would eat there again.

  • Melissa H.

Very nice atmosphere and friendly customer service! We ordered the special - mussels with a garlic butter sauce. They were the most perfectly cooked mussels I've ever had! My husband ordered the lobster diavlo and he really enjoyed it. My stuffed haddock was pretty good. I had the blueberry pie for dessert, since it's a Maine classic. The flavor was good but the pie was undercooked. The top was a little doughy!

Weeknight dinner after a long day. Restaurant located on the west side of Main Street so parking easier. Didn't have reservations but seated quickly at the downstairs bar. Atmosphere cozy and casual. Staff a little frazzled with a new computer system but still very accommodating. Manager/Owner actively present meeting customers needs. Decided on Caprese Salad for an appetizer. Our entrees included the Lobster Fra Diavlo and the Lobster & Shrimp Alfredo. Food was tasty, portions big, prices reasonable. House Merlot to wash it down. We'll be back.

Food was very good and reasonably priced. Outside patio is great but the chairs get stuck between the paver stones and it is hard to move your chair around. I would still go back.

Decided to try this on our third day in Bar Harbor mainly as the menu seemed quite extensive and offered some alternatives to the ubiquitous lobster - although they do have a pretty large range of crustacean-related items on the menu. It was pretty busy, but the staff were friendly and attentive and before too long we were ushered to a table upstairs by the window. Being a bit lobstered-out at this point, I went for the Mediterranean pasta, which had artichoke hearts (one of my favourite vegetables), peppers and chopped garlic. It was okay, but not as special as I was expecting from the description, and I could have done without the present owner (decidedly under-dressed in shorts and sandals) bragging about his business model to friends at the next table. The service was good, the food average. We had much better evening meals at Cafe This Way so probably wouldn't return here.

Went here for a group meal with friends. I only got chicken parm but it was delicious! My friends got the chicken Alfredo and pasta primavera both looked great. The blueberry daiquiri was also ordered and that seemed to look and apparently taste amazing. All in all a cool place indoors and out that I would recommend in Bar Harbor!

Recommended by our hotel staff, my friends and I came to Poor Boy's for dinner. The wait was pretty long, but the food made up for it. We ordered the following: Greek Salad, Stone Crab Claws, Lobster Bisque, Hot Spicy Dip, Scallop Wrapped Procuitto, and Crab Cakes. Of those, I really liked their Stone Crab Claws, Hot Spicy Dip, and Scallop Wrapped Procuitto. Their crab cakes, on the other hand, were very average and were definitely not worth the price. Lobster Bisque was just alright and salad was okay too. Overall, not a bad try, and I would come here again just for the appetizers.

I was disappointed in our meal at Poor Boy's. Prior evenings, we had seen people waiting to get into what appeared to be an inviting, quaint Bar Harbor restaurant, so we decided to give it a try. We had a mild wait at the bar before we were seated, which was fine since we did not have a reservation. The menu is pretty expansive, offering many pasta and protein entrees. However, I was unimpressed with the quality of food for the price. When we ordered, we were all offered the same options as sides: roasted vegetables, baked potato, or pasta marinara. These side dishes came separately in small little bowls. There was no plating or working towards creating a complete dish. I ordered the crabcakes and could barely finish them. They were bland and butter/oil drenched, not seasoned. According to the signs posted around the restaurant, Poor Boy's was known in Bar Harbor for its desserts. We decided to give the coconut cream pie a try and were disappointed in the quality. Overall, if you are in search of huge portions with no particular nutritional or flavorful value, go to Poor Boy's. Otherwise, I would recommend taking a walk down the street to one of the other restaurants in town, such as Cafe This Way or Havana. We had dinner here because it was one of the choices allowed us with the vouchers from the Bar Harbor Motel. I was not overly impressed with the place but my wife liked it very much. I will admit I'm a bit fussy on certain things- like a table that is level, soup that I like the taste of and a steak not tougher than my knive can handle. I had no problem with the setup of the restaurant- although I will say the tables we walked by on the porch were a bit tight. We ate upstairs immediately next to the stairs. The table had a definitely tilt to it. The prices were not outrageous- nor were they economical either. The portions were fine- not too big and not too small. We had mediocre service- things took a bit too long at times. I also have a personal dislike for restaurants that have either no choice as to what salad dressing you can get or only have 2-3 and none of the "regular" popular ones. I like a salad but I have limited preferences on dressings and they don't seem to be in synch with many restaurants these days. I guess this is my problem, though. I guess I'll have to breakdown and bring my own salad dressing when i go out. I don't want to sound unduly harsh on this restaurant- hence the 3 stars. If my wife was rating it she would probably give it 4 and I want to give it 2 so I went with a compromise. Dennis

This restuaurant was so fabulous we ate here twice during our stay the first week of September 2011. The first night we had the whole lobster dinner, a steal at $22.99 with salad, side and dessert. The second night I had the Maine crab cakes with an italian parsley pesto type sauce. Let me tell you, this crab/pesto combination just sings in your mouth and works so perfectly together. Two VERY memorable dinners I will not soon forget.... Definitely add this restaurant to your dining list while in Bar Harbor.

It was okay. The clam chowder was watered down and i've had better lobster. They did have a good special for 21.99 tht included lobster, pasta or potato, chowder or lobster bisque and a desert. Good for quantity but not quality. Also we were charged for getting hot water. Kinda ridiculous to charge us for water. Service was okay the bus girl was easily overwhelmed.

One of the cool things about returning each year to a vacation spot is you get to know what restaurants are good, which are not, and more specifically, what exactly you need to order at the good ones. Such is the case with Poor Boy's. I've eaten here five times now. It is possible to have a 5 star meal here. And it is possible to have a 2 star meal here, so heed my advice. Here are the rules: 1.) Make a reservation. Specifically request the front first floor "patio". (It used to be a porch but they just redid it and now it is more like an indoor patio) Without a reservation, expect to wait 45 minutes minimum and get seated anywhere. 2.) Eat on the indoor patio on the first floor. I've eaten inside twice and thought the place was really average. When I've eaten on the porch, it's been dramatically better. The atmosphere between the two (either upstairs porch or downstairs patio) is night and day. Just to be clear, they have a back first floor porch. Not as good. You want the patio that faces the street. Second best location is porch on the second floor. The porch on the first floor is at the entrance so there is way too much traffic to be able to enjoy a relaxing meal. 3.) Order lobster. If you aren't in the mood for lobster, don't eat here. Period. Nothing else is very good. But the lobster is excellent. Basically, they take fresh lobster meat, place on top of pasta (linguini or bowtie) and add sauce (alfredo, fra diavolo, butter, etc). I have found their cream based sauces a bit too heavy for lobster, though they are still good. The fra diavolo is particularly good. I've never had it like it was prepared here. A total surprise, but brilliant. They use whole tomatoes and add chopped red peppers. The red peppers look like tomatoes so they don't stand out, but they've got a crunch to them that is a perfect addition to the softness of the pasta and lobster. Just gives it the right bite. 4.) Get the blueberry daiquiri. So thick you almost need a spoon. Best daquiris in Bar Harbor. They take a pint of farm fresh blueberries and a scoop of ice and mix (puree?) them together. Absolutely amazing. Can't come to bar harbor without eating either lobster or blueberries, and this place lets you do the two together. The daquiri can be virgin too, if you prefer, so even non-drinkers can enjoy this delicious treat. It's so good it makes up for everything else. If you stray from these rules or aren't in the mood to follow them, then I take no responsibility for your mediocre dinner, and judging from some of the reviews, I think it's a fairly accurate assessment. But to sum up, considering I've eaten here five times, clearly suggests there's something excellent about poor boy's that keeps me coming back.

I don't give you 5 stars very often but Poor Boy's definitely deserved it. They were a little late seating us for our reservation so they bought us blueberry martinis to make the extra 15 minute enjoyable. After being seated we started with the muscles and king crab leg appetizers, both were delicious. AFter the appetizers we both ordered the twin lobsters. The lobsters were huge. Our waiter took the time to teach us how to open them properly and get all of the meat out. It was a fun experience and the lobster meat was absolutely delicious and there was so much of it! During dinner we also ordered blueberry daiquiris which were amazing. The food and service were both amazing. I see other reviews complained about the pasta dishes but if you stick to lobster you will not be disappointed. Also I took the advice from a fellow yelper and requested the front patio seat which was perfect! Great ending to our weekend in Bar Harbor, def. go to this restaurant if you want some great blueberry drinks and great lobster!

I've spent two weeks on Mt. Desert Island and going out for dinner every night. My most recent visit included a trip to Poor Boy's on the first night after hearing so many good things about it. Not only was the service horrible, but it was some of the worst food that I've ever had in my life. I had the lobster with pasta. The sauce with the pasta was so bland that even a lot of pepper didn't add much to it. For the cost of this place, I recommend going to any of the other wonderful establishments even within the same block. Not worth the cost at all.

Our ONLY horrible dining experience during our 8-day stay on the island. After waiting 45 minutes to be seated, we were excited to try their food. We enjoyed the mussels appetizer and their blueberry dacquiri. My husband ordered the steak. It was RAW. I ordered the salmon. ALSO RAW!! It was so disgusting, we didn't even try to correct them. We were so turned off by our raw food that we just left. We filled up on ice cream in Bar Harbor instead.

We had a large group and Poor Boys was able to accommodate us on the 2nd floor even when we called late. Lobster feast and blueberry daiquiris were the highlights. Excellent value for the Lobster dinner - soup, whole lobster, pasta, side, and dessert. Service was fine. Overall a good experience for lobster in Bar Harbor.

Family members go here every year on their autumn trip to Bar Harbor, but this year the trip to Poor Boy's did not seem to live up to expectations. They had the worst service I've experienced in quite a while. Our server seemed to be overworked--she couldn't get my order right and was careless. The pasta primavera was bland and the vegetables were overcooked. It's pretty bad when the highlight of your meal is the coffee with liqueur for dessert. Others in my party were very disappointed that they were teased with the promise of blueberry pie but then there was only one piece left by dessert time. You couldn't pay me to go back to Poor Boy's.

This was so nice of them to do this, and we will certainly visit them again next yr...loved the scallops and the Blue Berry Martini..yummo..

    (3)

  • Kevin N.

I like this place but judging from the looks of the other dishes, I recommend you order the lobster. They are a bit smallish so consider the twin lobsters plate. They did make a very fresh salad as an appetizer. They also had a $15 dollar wine list which included several bottles that would sell for $11 in the store up the street. Excellent dessert list, and I don't normally eat sweets. Blueberry cheesecake was fantastic. Cons: the clam chowder was thin and heavy on potatoes. Pasta looks like its from a box.

I'm late posting this... Me and my husband have been going to Poor Boys since we started dating and now as a married couple and we enjoyed Poor Boys every year and recomended it to all our friends as the best place in bar harbor for great pasta for a reasonable price... but after our last visit last month, we can tell things have gone downhill there. The service has been good and consistent, but man... the food and the drinks are not what it once was... maybe they have a new kitchen staff but their pasta was undercooked, the sauce was just not like it was befor. I loved their blueberry sodas because it was refreshing with a real nice frsh blueberry taste but this year, their blueberry sodas were so thick and syrupy it was not drinkable and asked the waitress to bring us extra club soda to thin it out. I guess their pasta deal is still a good deal (finish one order of pasta and get a second bowl free) but not worth it if it isn't good. I'm so sad to say all this because I really loved this place and had a lot of great dinners there. I hope they can get back to those days soon.

Eh. Standard diner-ish food. Drinks weren't great. Very heavy, big portions, nothing "gourmet" about it. Early bird specials available. Not terrible but definitely will not be returning.

We had diner at Poor Boy's per the recommendation of the innkepper. It is not a fancy place by any means. The food is simple and somewhat inexpensive, especially for lobster. I had a deal that included the soup, a starch, a 1lb lobster and dessert for $21.95. My partner had clams as an appetizer. It was very abundant. The service was excellent. Overall it was a nice experience.

Overall a good experience for lobster in Bar Harbor.

i did not go there for seafood, i saw the dessert menu and i was like let's go in there. The unlimited menu for pasta is cheap and not to mention how great the dessert is. you go bar harbor they only make pies, and there is the only place you can find real Italian and good dessert.
